Invisible Braces

Tooth straightening for adults

Mention dental braces to most people and they are likely to recoil in horror at the thought of wearing them. The reality though is that these are the most effective method in correcting any misalignment of our teeth. The good news is that there are now a number of adult braces on the market which are often also called ‘invisible braces’. By far the most popular of these is Invisalign.

Using the latest in computer technology and 3D modelling, Invisalign braces offer a great way to straighten teeth without the discomfort or unsightly appearance of traditional braces. As the name suggests, they are also extremely difficult to detect when they are being worn.

The Procedure

After an initial consultation, impressions and images of your teeth will be taken and a 3D digital model of your teeth will be produced and this will be used to determine the actions needed to be taken by the braces to move your teeth to the desired position.
From these results, a series of braces will be made. These are in the form of 'trays' that fit directly over the teeth themselves and are made from a hard wearing medical grade plastic. Each of the braces are designed to move your teeth a little further towards the desired position. After the first brace has been in place for a few weeks and has moved the teeth as planned, it is then removed and simply replaced with the next brace which moves the teeth a little more. This process continues until the teeth are in their correct position.

Advantages of Invisalign Braces

The most obvious advantages of wearing Invisalign adult braces over traditional ones is the appearance. As Invisalign braces are made from a transparent plastic type material, they are extremely difficult to detect when they are being worn. It is highly likely that anyone will notice unless you actually tell them.

As well as this advantage, unlike traditional braces which are worn all of the time, Invisalign braces are designed to be removed when you are eating. This has two major benefits; firstly, it enables you to eat without worrying that food will get stuck in the wires of traditional braces and secondly, food will not become trapped as is often the case with traditional braces. This causes the dual problems of bad breath and decay as the trapped food decays. You should always clean your teeth after eating however before replacing your Invisalign braces or this problem may occur.  You should also remove them at any other time that you need to clean your teeth.

Most wearers also find Invisalign braces comfortable to wear. Naturally, they may feel a little strange at first but this will soon wear off and you will forget that you are wearing them. This is important as the braces are designed to be worn for a minimum of twenty hours a day and should therefore be worn whilst asleep.

They can also be removed if need for important occasions; for example photographs where they may be noticeable in close up shots. It should be borne in mind that though that the longer that the braces are not worn, the longer the full process will take.

How Long Does the Procedure Take to Work?

The length of time taken for Invisalign to correct the alignment of your teeth will depend entirely on how severe the problem is in the first case. This will be discussed at your consultation and the dentist will advise you of this at this stage.
